Zero-Click Search Strategy: How to Measure Visibility

AI Overviews cut clicks to the top result by about 58%. Build a zero-click search strategy on mention rate, citation share and share of voice.

A zero-click search strategy measures whether the answer names you, because the click no longer tells you. When an AI Overview appears, the top organic result gets about 58% fewer clicks, according to Ahrefs. Report mention rate, citation share and share of voice next to Search Console impressions, and treat clicks as one outcome among several.

A zero-click search is one that ends without a click on any result, and it is now the usual outcome. SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb clickstream data put the US share at 68.01% for January to April 2026, against 60.45% in 2024.

Clicks still matter. They are the part of search you can count and attribute, and they are shrinking for a specific set of queries. The rest of the value now sits inside an answer your analytics cannot see, so you need a second instrument to measure it.

How much do AI Overviews cut clicks?

The best current estimates put the loss at about half for the top results. The exact figure depends on who measured, on which queries, and against what baseline. Three studies are worth knowing, and they disagree in useful ways.

Ahrefs compared keywords that gained an AI Overview with informational keywords that never had one, then projected what CTR would have been without it. The authors describe the result as a correlation. It covers desktop only, and part of the wider decline comes from other SERP features they could not separate out.

Pew measured real browsing behavior rather than aggregate CTR. Its panel also ended the browsing session after 26% of pages with an AI summary, against 16% without one. For a publisher, that second number is the harder one: after a quarter of those searches, the user stopped browsing altogether.

Seer's monthly series shows how much the number moves. CTR on queries with an AI Overview fell to 1.31% in December 2025, then climbed to 2.36% by February 2026. A single month's CTR tells you little about the trend.

Searchers have noticed. Ahrefs tracked a group of 14 zero-click and traffic-loss keywords, including "zero-click search strategy", whose combined search volume grew 336%. The post does not state the window for that group.

Which queries lose the most clicks?

Long, question-shaped informational queries lose the most, and the top three positions take the biggest hit. Commercial and transactional queries trigger fewer AI Overviews, so they lose less on average.

Ahrefs broke the CTR change down by position, and the loss shrinks further down the page:

PositionCTR change with an AI Overview
1-58.0%
2-50.8%
3-46.4%
4-38.8%
5-32.6%
10-19.4%

Seer's intent split points the same way: it saw AI Overviews on 36% of informational queries, against 8% of commercial and 5% of transactional ones. On informational queries where the brand was not cited, organic CTR fell 67% over 2025. On transactional queries where the brand was not cited, it fell 48%, from 4.17% to 2.15%, on a much smaller sample of 1.73 million impressions.

Query shape matters as much as intent. Pew found that question-word searches and searches of ten words or more produced summaries more often than one- or two-word searches; the AI search statistics roundup has the full trigger table.

Neither Ahrefs nor Seer splits out branded queries. Check your own: filter Search Console to queries containing your brand name and compare CTR before and after AI Overviews reached your market. If branded CTR holds while non-branded informational CTR drops, the loss sits in discovery, which is where answer visibility matters most.

What should replace CTR as the visibility metric?

Replace it with three measures of presence inside the answer: mention rate, citation share and share of voice. Each needs a fixed prompt set and a stated number of runs, or the figure means nothing.

MetricDefinitionQuestion it answers
Mention rateShare of answers that name your brand, for a fixed prompt setDo the engines bring us up at all?
Citation shareShare of all cited links in those answers that point to your domainDo the engines use our pages as evidence?
Share of voiceYour mentions as a share of all brand mentions in the set, you plus competitorsWho wins the answers in our category?
Sentiment and accuracyHow the answer describes you, and whether the facts are rightIs the mention helping or hurting?

The AI visibility guide defines each metric and its common measurement errors. AI share of voice covers the competitive version in depth.

Two rules keep these numbers honest. First, fix the denominator. A mention rate is "12 of 40 prompts, five runs each, across ChatGPT and Perplexity", never "we showed up when I asked". Second, expect variance. In our August 2026 study, 68.8% of the brands seen in any of five runs of a prompt showed up in every run. The other 31.2% came and went, so a single check can miss a brand that a repeated run would find.

These metrics also map back to CTR. Seer found that brands cited inside the AI Overview earned 120% more organic clicks per impression than brands left out, on informational queries across 2025. Citation share is a leading indicator for the clicks that remain.

Citlyze runs your prompt set on a schedule across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and reports mention rate, citation share and share of voice against the competitors you choose. You can try it free for 14 days, no card required.

How do you build a zero-click visibility report?

Combine three sources in one monthly table: Search Console for exposure and clicks, prompt tracking for presence inside answers, and analytics for the visits that still arrive. None of the three sees the whole picture alone.

  1. Group your queries in Search Console. Export 16 months of query data and tag each query by intent (informational, commercial, branded) and shape (question or not). A regex filter on who, what, how, why and best catches most question queries.
  2. Record a baseline per group. For each group, log monthly impressions, clicks, CTR and average position. Mark the month AI Overviews reached your main market.
  3. Check the Generative AI performance report. It counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, with no clicks or queries. The Search Console AI report guide explains how to read it without dividing clicks by AI impressions.
  4. Write 5 to 15 prompts per query group. Phrase them the way a buyer would ask an assistant: longer and more specific than the search query. Include the competitors you lose deals to.
  5. Run the prompts on a schedule across engines. Record mention rate, citation share and share of voice per group, with the run count next to each number.
  6. Set up AI referrals in analytics. Create a channel group for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude referrers, and watch branded search impressions in Search Console as a downstream signal. The AI search attribution guide covers the referrers analytics mislabels.
  7. Annotate every change. Log content updates, Google core updates and AI feature launches by date, so a movement in the table has a candidate cause.

The finished report fits on one screen:

Query groupImpressions and clicksMention rateCitation shareShare of voiceAI referrals
Informational, questionMonth and changeMonth and changeMonth and changeMonth and changeMonth and change
Commercial
Branded

Read the rows as patterns rather than single numbers. Impressions up, clicks down and mention rate up suggests the answer carries your information and your name. Impressions up, clicks down and mention rate flat suggests the answer covers your topic but names someone else, which is the case to fix first.

If the report goes to a client or a leadership team, it also needs a competitor view and a value line. The AI search tracking report template adds both, with a worked ROI calculation.

What still earns the click?

Pages that finish a task the answer cannot finish still earn clicks. So do pages the answer cites, the one lever the data supports.

Seer's numbers put a size on the citation effect: 2.07% organic CTR for cited brands against 0.94% for brands left out, on informational queries in 2025. Cited CTR still ran 38% below queries with no AI Overview at all, so citation recovers part of the loss, not all of it. Paid results showed the same pattern, at 15.74% when cited and 11.19% when not.

Beyond citation, the click goes to what a summary cannot hand over:

  • Tools and calculators: a pricing estimator or ROI calculator needs the user's own inputs, so an answer can point to it but cannot replace it.
  • Data the user wants to keep: downloadable templates, datasets and checklists.
  • Depth on a decision: comparisons with real configuration detail, where a two-sentence summary leaves the buyer unsure.
  • Transactional pages: pricing, demos, sign-up and store pages.

Pew's 1% figure for clicks inside summaries is the warning here. A link in the answer does not guarantee a visit. Give the reader a reason to click that the answer cannot satisfy.

Is zero-click visibility worth anything without traffic?

Yes, when the answer shapes a decision you collect later through another channel. A buyer who reads an answer naming you and looks up your brand days later arrives in analytics as branded search or direct traffic. Nothing in that path records the answer.

You can collect three kinds of evidence. Watch branded search impressions in Search Console against your mention rate over the same months. Add "Where did you hear about us?" to demo and sign-up forms with an AI assistant option. And compare conversion rates of AI referral visits with your site average, since those visitors arrive further along. Each signal is circumstantial on its own. Together, tracked monthly against the same prompt set, they give leadership a better answer than a falling CTR chart.

Where to start this month

Pull your informational question queries from Search Console and find the ones where impressions held and clicks fell after AI Overviews arrived. Write prompts for those topics, run them across engines, and check whose name the answer carries. If it is a competitor's, you have found the gap that cost you the clicks, and the page to fix first. Citlyze tracks those prompts for you on a schedule; plans start with a 14-day free trial, no card.
