AI Referral Traffic Benchmarks 2026, by Industry

AI referral traffic grew 117% in a year but stays a small share of visits. Sourced benchmarks by industry, conversion data, and a business-case template.

AI referral traffic averaged 770.7 million visits a month worldwide between June 2025 and May 2026, up 117.4% year over year, according to Similarweb. For most sites it remains a low single-digit share of visits. The stronger case is quality: Adobe measured AI visits to US retail sites converting 54% better than non-AI visits in May 2026.

Low volume and high intent means sessions are the wrong yardstick. A channel that sends a few hundred visits a month can still matter if those visitors buy, and if the answers that sent them also shaped buyers who never clicked. The benchmarks below give you the outside view; your own analytics, set up to see AI traffic at all, give you the inside view.

The headline AI referral numbers for 2026

Similarweb's and Adobe's datasets agree on direction: AI referrals roughly doubled in a year, ChatGPT sends most of them, and retail visitors from AI now convert above average. Each source measures something different, so keep the scope column in view.

The zero-click row explains why referral counts understate AI's reach: two thirds of Google searches already end on the results page, and an AI answer that names your brand can do its work without sending anyone. ChatGPT also sends the bulk of what does arrive; Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Grok and DeepSeek share the rest.

Growth by industry

Every industry in Similarweb's data at least doubled, but volume and growth rank almost in reverse: marketplaces, news and travel hold the volume, while beauty and fashion grow fastest.

Source: Similarweb, worldwide, June 2025 to May 2026, published September 3, 2026.

Growth percentages mislead without the base. Beauty's 312.5% added about 1.5 million monthly visits; news and travel's 115.6% added about 23.9 million each. Similarweb also found that 22.6% of ChatGPT answers in travel carried web citations in May 2026 (US, desktop), against 6.8% across all conversations, which lines up with where the referral volume sits: categories where the answer has to send the user somewhere.

Adobe published a newer AI traffic report in August 2026 that we could not open at the time of writing, so the retail and travel rows above use its June post, which covers May 2026 data and is the original source of the 54% figure.

Nobody we found publishes that comparison directly. Adobe compares AI visits with all non-AI visits, a group that mixes organic search, paid search, email and other channels, and the answer differs by industry.

  • Retail: AI visits converted 54% better than non-AI visits in May 2026, up from 42% better in March 2026 and 38% worse in March 2025, per Adobe's April and June reports.
  • Travel: AI visits converted 28% less than non-AI visits in May 2026, though Adobe says the gap narrowed by nearly 70% since October 2024.
  • Engagement: AI-referred retail shoppers were 15% more engaged, stayed 53% longer, viewed 23% more pages and bounced 36% less.

B2B lead generation sits outside Adobe's retail and travel data. For a SaaS or services site, compute the comparison on your own traffic: conversion rate from AI referrals against organic search on the same landing pages, over at least a quarter, because monthly AI volumes are small enough for a few deals to swing the rate.

Why GA4 undercounts AI traffic

GA4 sees only AI visits that arrive with a recognizable referrer or tag, and it files many of those under Referral or Direct.

  • Missing referrers. Clicks from apps and some in-app browsers arrive without a referrer and land in Direct. Similarweb makes the same point about its own figures: visits without referrer data fall outside the count, so they are "a floor, not a ceiling".
  • Default channel grouping. GA4's default groups have no AI channel, so ChatGPT or Perplexity visits sit inside Referral next to every blog that links to you.
  • Google's AI surfaces. Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode as regular organic search, under the Web search type in Search Console (Google). In GA4 they arrive as google / organic, and standard reports cannot separate them from other organic clicks. The Search Console generative AI report shows impressions for those surfaces, with no clicks.
  • Influence without a click. A buyer who reads an answer, then searches your brand a week later, shows up as branded organic or Direct.

ChatGPT helps a little: OpenAI says it "automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs" from ChatGPT search (OpenAI). The AI search attribution guide covers the unmeasurable part in depth. For the measurable part, a custom channel group takes ten minutes:

  1. In GA4, open Admin, then under Data display click Channel groups (Google Analytics Help).
  2. Create a new channel group, or copy the default one so your other channels stay intact.
  3. Click Add new channel and name it "AI assistants".
  4. Add a condition: Source matches regex, with a pattern such as chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.ai|chat\.deepseek\.com|grok\.com.
  5. Click Reorder and move "AI assistants" above Referral. GA4 assigns traffic to the first channel whose rule it matches.
  6. Save. Google says custom channel groups apply to your reports retroactively, so past AI visits reclassify too.

Standard GA4 properties allow two custom channel groups, so agree with whoever owns analytics before you use one. Check the referrer list each quarter, since new assistants appear.

Building a business case for AI visibility

Combine three inputs: the AI traffic you can measure, its value per visit, and the visibility behind it that you cannot measure in analytics. Then set a target on visibility, which you can move, rather than on sessions.

InputWhere to get itFormula
A. Monthly AI referral sessionsGA4 "AI assistants" channelAverage of the last three months
B. AI conversion rateGA4, same channelConversions divided by sessions, over at least a quarter
C. Value per conversionCRM or e-commerce dataAverage order value, or lead value times close rate
D. Measured monthly valueCalculationA × B × C
E. Visibility on priority promptsPrompt trackingShare of runs where your brand is mentioned or cited
F. Growth assumptionSimilarweb industry growth, or your own trendStated, not assumed silently
G. Projected value in 12 monthsCalculationD × (1 + F), adjusted for the change in E you plan to deliver

Present D as the floor, since it counts only clicks you can attribute, and E as the lever. When the report goes to a budget holder, state the scope of every outside benchmark you borrow, the way the tables above do. Our citation rate benchmarking guide explains how to define E so it survives scrutiny, and the AI share of voice method covers the competitive version.

Set up the AI channel this week

Create the GA4 channel group, then pair the sessions it shows with your visibility on the prompts that send them. The industry benchmarks tell you whether your trend is normal; only your own data tells you whether the channel pays. Citlyze's AI traffic analytics attributes each AI visit and conversion to the engine that sent it, next to your mention and citation rate on the same engines, on every plan from $29 a month, with a 14-day trial and no card.
